AMARANTH SCHOLARSHIPS - The Grand Court of Washington Order of the Amaranth is providing a limited number of $1,000.00 Scholarships for High School and College Students.  Deadline for Scholarship Applications is to be into the Chairman of the Scholarship Committee is January of each year. The Scholarship Application will be posted online when available. MIGRANT YOUTH SCHOLARSHIPS:  SEMY (Secondary Education for Migrant Youth) has hundreds of scholarships available for migrant students (those whose families work in agriculture, etc). For info and an application, go to www.semy.org/resources/Scholarship_listing.pdf

WASHINGTON STATE UNIVERSITY:  Any Senior planning to attend Washington State University (any campus) needs to fill out the WSU Scholarship application that is on the website.  The application is just for WSU financial aid and is for monies that are available through WSU.  The scholarship application is due January 31st. 

FAFSA:  The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is also open on the internet; deadline for the FAFSA is February 15. Contact http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ for more information.

WILLAMETTE UNIVERSITY MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP AUDITIONS:  Willamette University in Oregon award over $300,000 in scholarships to music majors.  For more information, go to www.willamette.edu/cla/music or call the office of admissions at 1-877-LIBARTS.

COLLEGE GOAL SUNDAY:  Columbia Basin College is sponsoring a free workshop to help students and families complete the FAFSA (Federal Student Aid Form).  ALL COLLEGE BOUND STUDENTS should attend this workshop.  The date is usually in late January.  Call 1-888-758-2253 for more info.

COLUMBIA CENTER/SIMON MALL:  A one-time awards of $1,400 to high school seniors living in communities within an hour of a Simon Mall, who plan to attend an accredited university, two- or four-year college, technical or vocational school.   Applications for a SYF Community Scholarship are available now online at http://www.syf.org/syf.aspx?pgID=410 . All completed applications must be received by January 31. In addition, students must provide an official transcripts and their parent’s most recently filed tax form.

WASHINGTON CROSSING FOUNDATION:  Seniors, do you enjoy history? Politics? Is there government or military service in your future?  Go to www.gwcf.org for information on this scholarship worth $1000 to $7500; or call 215-949-8841 for more information.

AMERICAN INDIAN SCHOLARSHIP:  Washington residents with financial need and close social and cultural ties to an American Indian Tribe are eligible.  Applications can be filled out at www.hecb.wa.gov   Deadline is February 1.

COLLEGE BOUND SCHOLARSHIP - The College Bound Scholarship provides hope and incentive for students and families who otherwise might not consider college as an option because of its cost.  If you are eligible to receive free and reduced-price lunch; receive TANF benefits; are a foster youth and/or meet the income standards, you are eligible to apply for the College Bound Scholarship. The amount of the scholarship will be based on tuition rates at Washington public colleges and universities and will cover the amount of tuition and fees (plus $500 for books) not covered by other state financial aid awards.  Low-income 7th and 8th grade students who sign a pledge by June 30 of their 8th grade year are eligible. Students promise to graduate from high school, demonstrate good citizenship, and seek admission to a college or university. FRANK KAZMIERCZAK MEMORIAL MIGRANT SCHOLARSHIP:  Open to migrant Seniors who have a recent history of migration for agricultural employment, show scholastic achievement and financial need, and plan to teach as a career.  Go to http://www.migrant.net/migrant/scholarships.htm for more information; deadline is February 1st.

HISPANIC SCHOLARSHIP FUND:  Have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale (or the equivalent); Be a US citizen OR legal permanent resident with a valid permanent resident card or passport stamped I-551; Be pursuing or plan to pursue your first undergraduate or graduate degree; Must apply for federal financial aid using the Free Applications for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA); Be enrolled or plan to enroll full-time as an undergrad or graduate student in a degree seeking program at a U.S. accredited institution in the U.S., Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, or Guam.  Go to www.hsf.net for more information.

TRI CITIES OPTIMIST SCHOLARSHIP:  This is a local scholarship for $100 up to $6,000 which is open to EVERYONE.  You must submit a short 400-word essay on “The Internet: Today’s Evolution of Tomorrow’s Menace?”  The deadline is February 1st.  See the counselor for an application.

ESA FOUNDATION:  Many scholarships are listed under this organization; applicants must show character, leadership, service, financial need, and scholastic ability.  Each applicant can select up to three scholarships to compete for.  Deadline is February 1st for more information go to www.esaintl.com/esaf.

ENERGY SOLUTIONS FOUNDATION 10th GRADE SCHOLARSHIP:  This merit-based scholarship is open to students pursuing education in the fields of math, science, and engineering.  One 10th grade student per high school will be recognized with a $2000 scholarship.  Must have a 3.5 gpa.  Go to http://www.energysolutionsfoundation.org/scholar_app.php for an application.  See the counselor for more information; deadline is February.

WAVE SCHOLARSHIP AND POSTER DESIGN CONTEST:  Open to all Washington high school students.  Entries can be individual or by a team; they must be an original design and be 9” x 12” in size and must promote the WACE scholarship program.  You do not need to be enrolled in an art class to enter.  For an application form, go to www.wtb.wa.gov/wave    Deadline is February.

PACIFIC NORTHWEST NATIONAL LABS:  An eight week PAID summer research experience for minority students (Hispanic, African American or Native American) or Females who are current juniors or seniors.    The application can be filled out at http://science-ed.pnl.gov/students/precollege/srap.stm  (for minorities) OR http://science-ed.pnl.gov/students/precullege/ywis.stm (for females).   Must have a 3.0 gpa.  Deadline is February.

KFC COLONEL’S SCHOLARS PROGRAM:  Open to Seniors with a GPA of 2.75 or higher, who have a financial need and plan to pursue a 4-year Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) or  transfer to a 4-year college after earning a 2-year A.A. degree at a community college.  Awards are up to $5,000 per year.  Dates for applying are December 1st through February 10; go to www.kfcscholars.org for more information.

CBC FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP:  Open to students enrolling at CBC this fall.  You must be a full-time student and maintain a gpa of 2.5; two letters of recommendation are also required.  Be sure to complete the CBC admissions application as well.  Deadline is February. MARIST COLLEGE (NEW YORK) COMPUTER SCIENCE/INFORMATION TECH:  Twelve full tuition, room and board scholarships are offered to those majoring in Computer Science or Information Tech Systems.  Online application is at www.marist.edu/admission (on the application check “National Science Foundation Scholarship Program.”)  For more information, call 1-800-436-5483.

HISPANIC SCHOLARSHIP FUND:  Several scholarships, including the Gates Millennium Scholarship, are available to minority students who plan to attend college or vocational school after graduation.  For applications, go to https://apply.hsf.net/applications/  Deadlines range from December 15 to February 28th. 

BOCES GENESEO /GLORIA AND JOSEPH MATTERA SCHOLARSHIP:  Awards up to $500; you must have a history of migration, demonstrate financial need, and have been accepted into a college or technical school.  No deadline.  Go to http://www.migrant.net/migrant/scholarships.htm  for more information.

NATIONAL COMMISSION FOR COOPERATIVE EDUCATION:  Open to Seniors who plan to study cooperative education, science, mathematics, engineering and/or technology at one of EIGHT different schools:  Drexel University, Johnson & Wales, Kettering University, Pace University, Rochester Institute of Technology, University of Cincinnati, University of Toledo, or Wentworth Institute of Technology.  You must have a GPA of 3.5.  See the counselor for an application; deadline is February 15th.

CBC FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP:  Open to students enrolling at CBC this fall.  You must be a full-time student and maintain a gpa of 2.5; two letters of recommendation are also required.  Be sure to complete the CBC admissions application as well.  Go to www.columbiabasin.edu/foundation for a form, or see the counselor for more information.  Deadline is February.

ATRISCO HERITAGE FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP:  Open to Hispanic students that are heirs of Atrisco Land Grant from New Mexico.  You must have a 3.0 gpa and be a legal permanent resident.  Go to http://www.hsf.net/atrisco.aspx to apply.  Deadline is February.

FRESHMAN HONORS AT EASTERN WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY:  An opportunity for enhanced educational experiences for entering students, including smaller classes and lifelong intellectual development.  Must have a 3.6 GPA and superior SAT or ACT scores.  Go to http://honors.ewu.edu; deadline is February 1 (Priority admissions deadline is March 1). 

CAREERS THAT WORK! SCHOLARSHIP:  This award is for high school graduates who plan to attend a private career college in Oregon, Washington or Idaho.  If you are thinking about this kind of training, go see your counselor and get a $1,000 award (there are five for each high school!)  For more information, visit www.nwcareercolleges.org

NFIB YOUNG ENTREPRENEUR AWARD: For students interested in owning and running their own business.  Go to www.NFIB.com/YEA to apply.   

U-DOC:  This FREE program is for sophomores and juniors who are interested in becoming a health professional (doctor, dentist, nurse, etc.)  Students live at the University of Washington for 5 weeks in the summer, visiting various hospitals and health agencies in the Seattle area.  All costs for room and board are provided; students with geographic, educational or financial barriers are encouraged to apply.  Go to www.myomca.org  or www.smdep.org  for more information.  Deadline to apply is March 1st.

WSECU:  Applicants or their parents must be Washington State Employee Credit Union members.  Twenty $2,000 scholarships and seven $1,000 scholarships are available.  Academics, letters of recommendation, financial need and community service are considered.  Go to www.wsecu.org  Deadline is March 1st.

WASHINGTON APPLE EDUCATION FOUNDATION: Numerous scholarships available to Seniors whose families are connected with the tree fruit industry in some way.  Go to www.waef.org for the universal application for all scholarships.  Deadline is March 1; see counselor for more info.

WEA ESSAY CONTEST:  Prizes ranging from $25 to $150 (plus a pizza party for your class!) for writing a 600 word essay about “A Teacher to Remember.”  This is open to all students in high school.  Go to www.washingtonea.org/awards or see the counselor for an entry form.  Deadline is March 4th.

ART INSTITUTE OF SEATTLE PORTFOLIO SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION:  Offered to seniors who demonstrate ability and commitment (generally worth $21,000 - $42,000).  Programs include animation/game design, audio production, culinary arts, fashion design, fashion marketing, graphic design, industrial design, interior design, photography, video production, and web design.  Entries must be postmarked by March 12, 2010; you must also submit an entry form, supporting materials, a personal statement, a recommendation letter, and a current transcript.  For more information see Ms. Minkler.   

EVERGREEN STATE COLLEGE (Olympia, WA): Several Merit, Scholastic Achievement or Cultural Diversity scholarships are available, worth up to $5,100.  Each requires a separate application; minimum gpa is 3.0.  Go to www.evergreen.edu/scholarships or call 360-867-6170 for more information or see the counselor for a brochure.  Deadline is for college application AND scholarship application is March 15th.

WASA/PEMCO 21st CENTURY EDUCATOR SCHOLARSHIP: $4000 scholarship available to those who wish to pursue a career in education.  You must show leadership, community service, honors/awards and student activities; and you must have a gpa of 3.0.  Two essays, three reference letters and a transcript are also required.  See the counselor for an application or go to www.wasa-oly.org/services/schol10.pdf.  Deadline is March 15th.

IMAGINE TOMORROW/WSU:  Statewide contest with more than $100,000 to be awarded to teams in a competition to address the world’s energy problems.  Go to http://www.imagine.wsu.edu/ for more information.  Window for Registration is November 1st to March 31.

JAMES HOFFA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP:  You must be the son, daughter or grandchild of an active, retired, disabled or deceased Teamster member, and be in the top 15% of your high school class.  SAT or ACT scores are also required.  Get the application from the counselor.  Deadline is March 31st.

DIGIPEN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY /REDMOND, WASHINGTON:  This small private college, built to train video game designers and artists, is offering $3000 scholarships to female applicants with a 3.0 gpa.  There are also scholarships available for students with financial need, and those with strong academic or artistic talent.  The “Careers That Work” stipend also works at DigiPen.  Go to www.digipen.edu for more information.

WEST POINT MILITARY ACADEMY:  The Summer Leaders Seminar is open to Juniors and gives them an opportunity to spend one week on the West Point Campus, May 29-June 4 OR June 5-11.  You must have a 3.0 gpa, strong PSAT scores, and have demonstrated leadership potential.  Go to www.Admissions.WestPoint.edu/ to fill out an application.  Deadline is April 1st.

ETHNIC AWARENESS COMMITTEE SCHOLARSHIP:  Organized through the Washington    Financial Aid Association.  For more information, go to www.wfaa.org  Deadline is April.

AYN RAND ESSAY CONTESTS:  There are two different contests, one for 8th, 9th and 10th graders, one for 11th and 12th graders.  You must have read one of Ms. Rand’s novels (Atlas Shrugged or The Fountainhead) to qualify.  Prizes range from $30  to $2,000 and require you to write an essay on one of the novels.  March 20th is the deadline for the 9th and 10th grade essay;   April 25th is the deadline for the 11th & 12th grade essay.  Go to http://aynrandeducation.com/essay-contests/contest-the-fountainhead.html  for more information.

JERRY LONGMEIER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP:  $1500 available to a Senior pursuing higher ed.  You must be a member of FFA, have a minimum 2.0 GPA provide a transcript and two letters of recommendation.  Deadline is May 4th.

BEV AND WEST STOCK/SEATTLE MARINERS WOMEN’S CLUB:  A $1500 scholarship that is open to athletes who display good character on and off the playing field, and plan to pursue an athletic-related career.  See the counselor for an information sheet.  Deadline is June 1st.

ELECTRICAL APPRENTICESHIPS “LEARN WHILE YOU EARN!”  Open to all high school graduates, this program offers a registered Construction Electrician Apprenticeship Program (5-year, 8,000 hours).  Go to www.jatc112.orgthen click on check out electrifyingcareers.com to see an informational website, brochures, etc.  Or stop by their office at 8340 West Gage Blvd. in Kennewick or call 783-0589.   

MILITARY ACADEMIES:  Any student who is interested in applying for a nomination to the United States Military Academies can contact Doc Hasting’s office by phone, (509) 543-9396 or they can print out an application at www.hastings.house.gov  Military academies offer top-notch university educations; and an admission leads to a full four year scholarship, room and board, medical care and a monthly salary.  Students attending academies agree to serve in the military at least five years after college graduation.  

MILITARY REPRESENTATIVES:  Various branches of the military will have recruiters on campus all year.  See the counselor if you want to set up a specific appointment.
